On June 14th, we hosted more than 25 volunteers from Ehlers to help a single mom of five kids in Brooklyn Park with much-needed repairs and maintenance to her home. Volunteers spent the day painting exterior siding and trim, cleaning up the yard, power-washing and reinforcing a few boards on the deck, cleaning out the gutters, and making minor interior repairs. The generous team from Ehlers also donated a new picnic table, deck chairs, and grill to the family. We are grateful to the team from Ehlers for helping us complete this important project!
Opus Founders Day
We recently partnered with volunteers The Opus Group to provide much needed repairs for two low-income families for Founders Day. We helped a family in Blaine with seven kids. They bought their home seven years ago and in that time, the deck and stairs leading from their back patio door fell into serious disrepair. This created an unsafe egress/ingress situation, especially for their small children. We successfully removed their deck with the help of volunteers last year, and this year, we built them a safe, quality set of stairs so that the family has one less thing to worry about with raising their children.
We also helped an 84-year-old woman who lives in a mobile home and is unable to walk by herself. Her son lives with her and helps her get into and out of the house when he can. He also provides transportation to appointments and errands. We built her a ramp, providing her freedom from managing the old steps to her front door.
We are very grateful for the support and hard work of The Opus Group!
Wells Fargo Earth Day Extravaganza
We recently teamed up with Wells Fargo, Lake Street Council, Tree Trust, and City of Minneapolis for Wells Fargo’s Earth Day Extravaganza. On April 21st, Wells Fargo volunteers, friends, and family came together to get their hands dirty and give back. Volunteers worked in small groups to complete several activities, including:
• Placing mulch and water bags at young trees, weeding shrubs and cleaning up along the Greenway.
• Beautifying Lake Street which included weeding, removing tagging from walls and street side infrastructure, etc.
• Stenciling of storm drains and handout outdoor hangers for awareness in the community.
Thanks to everyone who joined us for the Earth Day Extravaganza!
Opus Group Ramp Team Helps a Special Kid
We recently partnered with our Opus Group Ramp Team to help a very special kid named Cali.
Cali is 12 years old and has intractable epilepsy with an average of six seizures a day. We built a wheelchair ramp for Cali two years ago. Her parents reached back out to us with another request – if they were able to raise the funds for the materials, would our volunteers build a large deck and ramp extension so Cali can spend more time outside?
Our incredible volunteers enthusiastically took on this second project. Cali made a drawing that her mom then turned into a thank you card for our volunteers (see the picture!).
Cali’s parents said, “We’ve been rebuilding our lives the best we can given her medical condition. The wheelchair access ramp has been a life-saving project that Cali has been able to use each day to go outside via her unstable walking abilities with assistance or sitting in the wheelchair.”
We are grateful to our amazing Opus Group Ramp Team for helping Cali and her family!
